August 11, 2021:

  • We are getting ready for the conference! Here is the information about how to participate:
    The Online platform consists of two parts: A Moodle website and Zoom rooms.
    • Moodle Website: This is the virtual space of the congress, which contains all information (or links to the information) required to participate in the congress. For example, the schedule of all events of the conferences can be found on the virtual space of the Moodle website. It also contains the links to the Zoom rooms for the live presentations.
    • Zoom rooms: The conference sessions will be on the Zoom platform. In particular, each conference will have a dedicated Zoom room for the sessions of that conference. There are also two additional dedicated Zoom room(s) for informal meet-ups with the conference participants. Please joint the Zoom room a few minutes earlier because the sessions will start on time. All the plenary sessions will be in a dedicated Zoom room, too.
    • Access to Moodle Website: The access to the Moodle website will only be available to those registered to the conference. An invitation to join the Moodle website will be sent to all registered participants when it is ready. Once you receive the invitation, please react immediately following the instructions given in the invitation.
    • Access to Zoom rooms: Links to the Zoom Rooms can be find in many different places on this virtual space (i.e., the Moodle website) as hyperlinks and you can access a room via a click on the hyperlink. Joining a Zoom room through these links will not require password and meeting IDs.

Call for papers


The objective of the 3rd IEEE International Conference on Decentralized Applications and Infrastructures (IEEE DAPPS 2021) is to facilitate the exchange between researchers and practitioners in the area of Decentralized Applications based on Distributed Ledger Technologies, Blockchains and related technologies. The conference will be co-located with IEEE SOSE, IEEE Mobile Cloud, IEEE BigDataService, IEEE AITest, and IEEE JCC.

It can be already seen today that Blockchain is making a huge impact on the way digital payments are made. However, the potential implications of Blockchain technologies go far beyond their application as the technological backbone for cryptocurrencies. In recent years, Decentralized Applications (dApps) have emerged as a new model for building a plethora of highly expressive applications.

dApps allow for various novel application scenarios, which are built upon distributed consensus and thus are hard to block or censor while providing public verifiability of peer-to-peer transactions without a trusted central party. For that, permissionless Blockchains such as Bitcoin or Ethereum rely on an unrestricted set of participants that run a (often time-consuming) consensus algorithm among them. In contrast, permissioned Blockchains, such as Hyperledger Fabric, distribute trust among a restricted set of consensus participants, a setup that can be well suited to model enterprise application scenarios in a more scalable fashion.

IEEE DAPPS 2021 will provide a high-quality forum for participants from research and industry. The conference will discuss key theories, algorithms, infrastructures, and significant applications for Decentralized Applications and Infrastructures, as well as emerging research topics.

Paper submission

IEEE DAPPS 2021 solicits research papers describing novel and previously unpublished scientific contributions to the field of Decentralized Applications and Infrastructures.

Two different types of papers can be submitted:

  • Regular papers (10 pages IEEE double column format)
  • Short papers (6 pages IEEE double column format)

Regular papers should describe novel and previously unpublished scientific contributions to the field of Decentralized Applications and Infrastructures. Each regular paper is limited to 10 pages, including tables, figures and references.

Short papers aim at presenting novel work in progress, novel applications, and novel industry perspectives in the field of Decentralized Applications and Infrastructures. Each short paper is limited to 6 pages, including tables, figures and references. Short papers will also be peer-reviewed, however, they will be evaluated with a focus on the potential for establishing new ideas and for sparking the interest of participants.

All papers must be written in English. Manuscripts must include a title, an abstract, and a list of 4-6 keywords. All papers must be prepared in the IEEE double column proceedings format. Please see:

IEEE DAPPS 2021 uses a double-blind review policy. Authors are required to remove their names, affiliation(s) and other identifying information from the header of the manuscript. This also includes meta-data in the submitted document as well as acknowledgement sections. Authors are required to cite their previous work in a neutral manner, for example, avoid “in our previous work [3]” and instead use “as shown in [3]”. Papers that do not meet these anonymization requirements may be desk-rejected without further review.

All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed. The name(s) of the author(s) will not be visible to the reviewers of a paper. The name(s) of the author(s) will be visible in the submission system to the General Chairs and the Program Committee Chairs. Authors should report any conflict of interest with the list of Program Committee members during submission of the manuscript, in which case the Program Committee Chairs will exclude the corresponding PC member(s) from reviewing the paper.

Paper publication

All accepted papers will be published by IEEE Computer Society Press (EI-Index) and included in the IEEE Digital Library. For publication, each accepted paper is required to be registered by one of its authors, and at least one author is required to attend and present the paper at the conference for the paper to be included in the final technical program and the IEEE Digital Library.

Keynote: High-Frequency Trading on Decentralized On-Chain Exchanges

  • Presenter: Arthur Gervais
  • Abstract: Decentralized exchanges (DEXs) allow parties to participate in financial markets while retaining full custody of their funds. However, the transparency of blockchain-based DEX in combination with the latency for transactions to be processed, makes market-manipulation feasible. For instance, adversaries could perform front-running--the practice of exploiting (typically non-public) information that may change the price of an asset for financial gain. In this talk we formalize, analytically exposit and empirically evaluate an augmented variant of front-running: sandwich attacks, which involve front-and back-running victim transactions on a blockchain-based DEX. We quantify the probability of an adversarial trader being able to undertake the attack, based on the relative positioning of a transaction within a blockchain block. We find that a single adversarial trader can earn a daily revenue of over several thousand USD when performing sandwich attacks on one particular DEX--Uniswap, an exchange with over 5M USD daily trading volume by June 2020. In addition to a single-adversary game, we simulate the outcome of sandwich attacks under multiple competing adversaries, to account for the real-world trading environment.

  • Bio: Arthur Gervais is a Lecturer (equivalent Assistant Professor) at Imperial College London. He's passionate about information security and worked since 2012 on blockchain related topics, with a recent focus on Decentralized Finance (DeFi).

    • Abstract: Fully automated formal verification of smart contracts is undecidable. Different contracts present different challenges for verification tools, in the form of loops, math, heavy data structures, complex control flow, or a mix of it all. In this talk we will discuss an experiment with real world contracts and several automated security tools; advantages and disadvantages of different approaches; and current as well as upcoming challenges in formal verification of smart contracts.
    • Bio: Leo Alt is the Formal Verification R&D Lead at the Ethereum Foundation, where the team works on formal verification tools for Ethereum smart contracts.
